What: For citizens of Le Claire who provide a donation to the troop of $40, the troop displays a flag in front of their property on five holidays during the year. The flags are put up in the morning and taken down at night. In the morning, flags are loaded into a parent’s vehicle with ideally 2 scouts and another parent. There are 7 routes around time and flags are set up for the addresses listed on the route. In the evening, the flags are picked up and brought back to the storage area.
Why: The Avenue of Flags is the main fundraisers for Troop 46 and provides a service to the community displaying the US flag. The money raised is used for summer camp discounts ($200 in 2026), awards for court of honors, keeping registration costs/dues to a minimum, and other scouting related expenses.
When: Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Veteran’s Day (6:00am morning shift and 6:00pm night shift…with one exception for Veteran’s day when night shift is 5:00pm)
Who: Both scouts and parents/grandparents/other family members! We especially need parents that own vehicles that can have flags loaded into them (trucks, mini-vans, SUVs, etc.) But we also need parents that can ride along in a vehicle and help direct the boys on which properties need flags. There are two work groups (on back of sheet) that alternate between morning and night duties.
Where: The flags are stored at Cody Storage which is northwest of the fire station at 2399 Trent St in Le Claire. Our storage unit is A21 which is in between the first two rows of units.
Flag Work Day: Each spring there are flag work days to get flags ready, distribute brochures, check receivers, and mark the location of the flags with spray paint. A separate calendar event will go out for this.
Troop 1082/82: Troop 1082/82 will be assisting our troop in the flag process. More hands will be available to help with the flags! They will cover one our seven routes in 2026.
Helpful things to let Nathan know:
- If you cannot make your assigned work time, please find someone that can swap with you from the other work group. For example, if you are out of town all of July 4th and have a morning shift, find someone from the evening shift that can cover your morning shift. Since that person is now working both shifts on July 4th, find a different holiday where you can cover their shift to make up for it. Then let Nathan Zietlow know about the swap. It is very important we have adequate help to put flags up and take them down. Attendance at each of the five holidays is expected.
- If you can help transport the flags with your vehicle, please let Nathan know
